Suggest Thyroid Medication Without Side Effects

Posted on Tue, 27 Jan 2015
Question: I had been taking Eltroxin 100 for 2 years and was doing well with it since my thyroid was under control. But lately the readings were high 9.36 so my doctor told me to start with thyronorm 100 mcg but as soon as I started taking thyronorm I started getting headaches. I want to know which is better Eltroxin or Thyronorm ?? I prefer the previous medication . Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Both are same medication from different companies

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Welcome to HCM. Thanks for posting this question.

Eltroxin and thyronorm are two brands of same medication - Thyroxine. It is just like Calpol and Dolo for paracetamol. Some patients are comfortable with a particular brand and we advice them to take that.

Once on treatment, your TSH should be less than 4 miu/ml. Since your TSH is more you need to increase the dose if you were already taking the medications 100 mcg regularly.

If I were your treating physician I would have increased your Eltroxin dose to 125 mcg/ day.

Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you.
