Question: My husband has hypertension ranging anywhere from 180/90 to 160/120 yesterday. He saw a PA on
Thursday and was started on Metoprol tar 25mg bid. So, he has been on this med for four days without significant improvement. I don't think this is even the regular start off dose and am wondering if I need to accompany him to the doctors office today.

Brief Answer:
There is a need for extra medication

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mrs,

It is a regular start dose for metoprolol, but in case of blood pressure 180 or 190 mm Hg it may not be enough. Your husband needs to take other medications as well. There are many other medications for blood pressure which we give together if we can't achieve adequate blood pressure control with one medication.
I would advise you to see a doctor to prescribe a new medication. Meanwhile I would advise your husband to check carefully kidney function, as he has too high diastolic blood pressure (120) which sometimes can be caused by kidney disease.

Hope this was helpful
