Brief Answer:
You can use this pill, but you have to take 4 pills twice in 24 hour period

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Levonorgestrel needs to be at a lower dose when combined with estrogen to be used as an emergency contraceptive (EC). The correct dosing is 4 tablets (so .12 mg if estradiol and .6mg of levonorgestrel) taken twice 12 hours apart (so a total of 8 pills in 24 hours)

This dose of estrogen is likely to make you feel nauseous, so you may want to purchase an anti-emetic or medication for motion sickness as it may help with the nausea.

EC works 85 percent of the time when taken in the first 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. Afterwards, some women bleed a few days after the medication, and some have a delayed period. You are more likely to bleed if you are close to your period coming.

I hope I was able to answer your question today and that my advice was helpful. If you have any further questions or need any additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Brief Answer:
You can use any oral contraceptive, but the estrogen dose must be over .1mg

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Any oral contraceptive can be used as emergency contraception, but the original medical trials only studied levonorgestrel. So most of the combined EC regimens use birth control with levonorgestrel, which also has a lower risk of causing clotting problems than some other progesterones. But with whatever brand you use, combined EC the amount of estrogen you take has to be over 100 micrograms (.1 mg).

I would not recommend XXXXXXX as a good choice for this because XXXXXXX has been shown to have a higher risk of clotting than levonorgestrel. Desogestrel also has a higher risk of clotting but less so than XXXXXXX

So any of these brands will be equally effective, but in terms of safety, I recommend the levonorgestrel regimen as the safest. But all should be effective in preventing pregnancy.

I hope this additional information is helpful.

Regards,

Dr. Brown
