Question: Hello Dr,
Last month 25th we are blessed with a baby girl. We had IVF early for the pregnancy.
On her birth, she is of 3KG. On the 4th day she got Jaundice(18.8 in measurement) and kept in phototharaphy for 2days.
After 10days, we went for initial checkup, baby weight is 2.5kg.
On 25th day(today) we again visited Dr and baby weight tis 2.6kg.
Dr, suggested the health drink(Dexolac) and the reason would be due to insufficient milk.

Mothers daily Food:

1. Cub of mothers's horliks with 2pices of bread
2. Garlic 2 pices
3. Breakfast : bowl of rice with vegetables and rasam.
4. Lunch : same as breakfast.
5. Evening : Tea and fruits
6. Dinner : Tiffen items.
7. Non-veg weekly once.
Now here is my questions.
1. Is the above food is habit is enough for good supplementary of milk production Or do we need to add more??
2. Dexolac is good to have for a baby with 25days? will it have any side effects??
3. Since few old age ppl around us are suggesting to go for Cow Milk, is it good to go for that?

Kindly provide your comments on it.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Mother should take hearty diet

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for your query.

Yes reason could be insufficient milk or inadequate feeding. he mother has to spend a lot of time with baby to fulfil the needs of baby. In this the whole family needs to help. The mother should take hearty diet. More of calories need to be added to her food. High calorie foods like ghee, butter, cheese, sweets, pinni, cookies, cakes, pastries, etc should be added to her current diet especially in snacks, breakfast and lunch. Three snacks should be taken alternating with meals. Raw garlic can be irritating to stomach and should be avoided. 5 servings of fruits and salad are also needed.

Yes dexolac is ok but breast milk should be priority. Sometimes babies give up breast milk when infant formula are given in bottle. Bottle feed is easier for baby so baby gives up breast feeding. Thus I do not really suggest bottle feed. Same reason cow's milk cannot be given by bottle. Cow's milk lacks in iron otherwise it is a good. If iron supplement can be given alongwith then it can be given.

Hope it helps.
