Question: My daughter is 21 year old. She attends college. For the last 3 -4 weeks she has had a swollen lymph gland behind her left ear. It does not hurt. It is just hard and swollen...like a lump. She does get fatigued...which comes and goes. She will be normal....and then she will get very pale and look like she is sick. She is always in good health, she exercises and runs, eats very healthy, and drinks a lot of water. She went to the doctor 2 weeks ago and they tested her for mono and it was negative. They gave her an antibiotic and said that if the swelling does not go down to see an ENT doctor when she comes home for Thanksgiving. The swelling has not went down. I am having a hard time getting a doctors appointment over the holiday time period. She goes to college out of state. They did take a blood test, and the test results associated with her red blood count (RBC, Hematocrit, etc.) were higher and outside the normal range, as well as her lymph (%). White blood count was within range. Should I still take her to a ENT and perhaps delay her going back to school a few days?

Brief Answer:
Delay until she gets back to school

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

Your daughter has had a lymph node behind her ear that is hard and non painful. This has been present for 3-4 weeks. She has been treated now with a course of antibiotics but the lymph node has not resolved. I think this is a very common finding and since all her blood work is normal there is little to be concerned about i.e. no lymphoma.

I would have her continue to watch and wait for another month. If the lymph node is still there then she should see an ENT and have it biopsied.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any further questions
