Suggest Remedy For Swollen Feet After Injury

Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Question: about 2 wks ago i stepped through a metal grating which rubbed an area about 6 inches long against the outside of my leg, just below the calf muscle. didn't break the skin. about a wk after the incident i noticed a pocket of fluid under the skin. it is not painful, red or tender. After being on my feet all day the area becomes swollen. In the morning, after sleeping with the lower leg elevated about 4 inches for most of the night, the swelling is gone, and then it looks like just fluid under the skin. Other than the swelling at the end of the day, there is no discomfort, just a concern about what is going on with it.

Detailed Answer:

Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query along with attached photograph and understand your concern. It seems to be Hematoma. No need to worry. It will gradually resolve. Thrombophobe gel local application 3-4 times a day will help in resolving it. Elevation of limb in night and resting period will be of help.Crepe bandage may be help in day times. You can take analgesic such as ibuprofen if you have pain. Vitamin B and C help in resolving it.

You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.

I thought a Hematoma was a burst blood vessel. Is this more of a Seroma, which is just blood plasma clear fluid leaking from a small blood vessel.

Brief Answer:
Hematoma more common than Seroma.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Hematoma is collection of blood due to internal injury there is collection of blood in subcutaneous tissue. It is not due to burst blood but due to small capillaries are injured leading to collection of blood in subcutaneous tissue. A hematoma is a localized collection of blood outside the blood vessels, usually in liquid form within the tissue. After injury Hematoma are more common than Seroma.

However seroma is not something I will outrightly rule out; albeit the chances are low; Seromas can also sometimes be caused by injury, such as when the initial swelling does not fully subside. The remaining serous fluid causes a seroma that the body usually gradually absorbs over time (often taking many days or weeks.
Everything else already discussed.
