Question: Ive had alot of stress this past year. Suffered many anxiety attacks. Now im feeling emotionally numb and its hard to sleep and eat. Its hard to cry or laugh when before it would come so naturally. But i am sleeping eating and drinking as much as possible. Could this be severe depression? Will this go away on its own?

Brief Answer:
Yes it is Severe Depression.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

Yes , in my opinion you are suffering from Severe Depression. Though depression affects sleep and eating habits but it need not affect in each and every case .

Being emotionally numb and not even being able ( feeling ) to cry indicates that depression is so much that you are losing the feeling of sadness also . This indicates that the depression is so severe that you don't want to feel anything , don't want to do anything . This we call it as Anhedonia.

You require counselling and medications from a Psychiatrist. I strongly recommend you get this as soon as possible. Till then don't be alone , always be with friends or family ( even while sleeping ) .

NO , this won't go away on its own. Kindly consult a Psychiatrist.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Thank you. I saw my family doctor today and they are testing thyroid, testosterone, and every thing else. And i see my psychologist Monday. Its just really unnerving to go through this. It does help that you told me to have hope and that people have recovered. I just have a few more questions. Ive not been sleeping well for a long time, months. Could that be a cause? Also i had Klonopin prescribed to me last year for anxiety episodes. I only was prescribed it on an as needed basis. So i took it twice a month on average for about four months. Sometimes a whole pill and sometimes half a pill. Last time i took a klonopin was toward the end of December and this emotional numbness started big time this week. I do laugh still but its a passing feeling. I do cry but it quickly shuts off. I do have windows of motivation and glimpses of emotions from memories. So do you think the Klonopin could have caused emotionsl numbness? Ive read it has caused anhedonia in other people. Also i was diagnosed with OCD and generalized anxiety disorder last year. Could i just be going through an OCD cycle and imaging i dont have emotions wgen i really do? Ive felt emotionally flat before in my life but this is worse. Thank you for your help

Brief Answer:
Its unlikely due to Klonopin.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Kindly go through the tests as if any problems in them could be easily corrected.

Lack of sleep is not the cause of depression but is the symptom of depression.

Klonopin does causes lack of interest , emotional numbness but for that it needs to be taken on daily basis for months , this is not your case as you have taken it very few times.

I still suspect depression as the cause in you. Very unlikely to be OCD.

Moreover you said you do laugh or cry sometimes but for short duration, that's a good sign . This indicates that depression is not very severe . Hence high chance of you getting back to normalcy.

Hope this information helps you.

Regards.
