Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: Hi I have odd shaped very sore lump that is on the bottom of my anal hole closest to my scrotum, I am not sure what it is whether it is an anal abscess or hemorrhoid? And can I drain it myself using a sterilized needle?

Brief Answer:
This is an abscess.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

This definitely looks like an abscess. It could appear due to skin glands bacterial infection (most common reason). It is possible that this is a sign of fistula - a connection between the skin and rectum.
You can try to drain it by yourself with a needle. This should help, however incision may be necessary done by a surgeon. But needle drain can be tried.
If this wont cause pus evacuation, please consult general surgeon.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Hi doctor if it is a abscess where exactly can I drain it with a needle? Right in the middle and do these types of abscess go away by themselves if left alone and how long if so?

Brief Answer:
Right in the middle should be fine.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, right in the middle should be fine. Abscess if is left alone usually drains by itself and gets healed in that way. However the pain which is present before this happens, is so strong that most of the patients goes to the doctor.
It takes few days for ruptured/drained abscess to go away.

Regards.
