Question: I pulled muscles in my right hip and up by my shoulders trying to help move my father up in bed. he can't help much to move himself he weighes 250 last time he was weighed. I pulled these muscles around 3 weeks ago. I keep having pain that is in the hip area and kind of makes the side of my hip and into the front of my upper leg ache, my shoulders are less sore but still are not pain free. I know I am getting older (65yo now) but how long does this type of pain take to go away.?

Brief Answer:
Muscle spasm should recover with in 2 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have studied your case.

According to your symptoms this looks as acute lumbar muscle sprain in your back and shoulder.
Most probably due to lifting of heavy weight.
Another differential diagnosis can be lumbar disc bulge leading to sudden onset of pain.Intervertebral disc compresses spinal cord and leads to back pain and shoulder pain.

Muscle spasm should recover with in 2 weeks, as it has not recovered you may need further investigation.

When such patient comes to our hospital we usually do x ray to rule out any nerve compression.
MRI spine will show any disc bulge is there or not.
And when muscle sprain is confirmed muscle relaxant, analgesic and neurotropic medication can be started consulting your doctor.
Till time, avoid lifting weights, Sit with support to back. You can consult physiotherapist for help.
Physiotherapy like ultrasound and interferential therapy will give good relief.

Dear Dr Gandi,
If this was a bulging disc would thepain be getting less? It was very painful the day after and it is not as severe now the hip seems to be the area that hurts most but it is getting better it just seems if I sit too much (I work on computer) or try to lift or twist it seems to anger the area that is deep in the buttock and then the pain begins to ache in the side of the right hip and down the will front of the thigh, it is not as severe as it was in the beginning, My husband thinks I am just healing slower than I did when I was younger because of my age (ouch) Since we really cant afford alot of testing what would be the longest you could expect the pain to wax and wane? I would hate to spend a lot on test when it might just take a couple more weks to resolve.. Is that reasonable? Is there things I can do at home to help the healing go faster?

Brief Answer:
Explained below

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Disc pain may reduce or increase in particular position.

If you do not want further test you can wait for 2 to 3 weeks more.
Till time you can do hot fomentation and apply analgesic gel for relief, take rest.
If you can do TENS therapy at home this may give early pain relief.

If still after few weeks pain remains persistent then you should investigate further.
