Question: Hi,
My son, 4.5 years old had been expressing pain while passing urine for past few days. Did the following as per our doctor suggestion:
- Urine and culture report: It has come normal
- Ultrasound scan of abdomen: Everything is normal
He doesnt have fever or other illness. He is in fact quite normal at all other times and says pain only while urinating. Sometimes there is some urge to go for frequent urination.
Our question: What else could be the problem and what else needs to be checked?

Brief Answer:
It may be overactive bladder

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

There are very limited common conditions like infection, stones causing painful urination in this age and most of these diagnosed with the help of urine test and ultrasound.
So I would like to get these test repeated if symptoms persist.

There is one condition called overactive bladder which can cause voiding dysfunction like painful urination, increased frequency and/or leaking of urine.
In this condition the urine examination and ultrasound both may be not show any abnormality.
Few psychological condition may also present with this symptom with normal report.
So I suggest you to get the test repeated and consult a pediatric nephrologist to rule out overactive bladder or psychological disorder.if the symptoms persists.

I hope this helps.
Please do ask if you have any more query.
Regards
