Suggest Remedy For Excessive Hair Fall When Having Hypothyroidism And PCOD

Posted on Tue, 28 Apr 2015
Question: I have hypothyroidism and PCOS, my hair is falling out and I have gained 35 pounds in a year. I'm a 33 year old female. I'm really depressed and tired all the time. I don't have insurance so I saw a doctor at Planned Parenthood to get a birth control pill to help with the PCOS symptoms and she said all birth control is the same and gave me loestrin, is this going to make my hair fall out even more?

Brief Answer:
Weight reduction would help

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for your query.

I have read you query and I understand your concerns about PCOS and its effects.

Following is my reply:

1) PCOS is known to cause irregular periods and also hair fall due to androgen excess. Even hypothyroidism causes hair loss.

2) Best option would be to lose weight by regular exercise and diet. Losing weight will regularize cycles, reduce hair loss as well help in getting pregnant ( if you are trying).

3) You can take birth control pill ( loestrin) which will help you. But if you are trying for pregnancy, dont take it. This wont increase hair loss. Reduction in hair loss decrease is marginal only.

4) Losing weight is best option.

I hope I answered you query and addressed your concerns.

Let me know if you wish to ask any further questions. I will be glad to help you.

Regards,
Dr. Soumya
