Question: hi
Iam 32 year old female.
i have continuous cough with mucous expelling for past 1 year and breathing difficulty during night with cracking sounds from the oesophageal region. i end up with a phloem vomit during night before the uneasiness subsides seldom with few blood filaments, and then only be able to sleep with eased pain n cough n irritation. Endoscopy revealed hiatal hernia. Doctor advised me Sompraz IT and Montair LC. I have been taking them for the past 2 months. After that montair LC was stopped, and my cough re-occured. Should i be on a continuous medication for life long? how many months does this treatment last? Are there any alternative remedies other than tablets?

Acid reflux or allergy

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I went through your query and understood your concerns.

Hiatal hernia causes gastric acid reflux into throat which causes irritation resulting in cough. repeated trauma from acid prone to bacterial infection .

I need to know few more details on your history .
Do you have any history of allergy ?
Any history of allergy in your family in terms of eczema or asthma?
Wat aggravates your cough?

with your description of symptoms there are two possibilities one acid reflux, acid reducing medication do helps to reduce symptoms and avoid spicy heavy food during night time and there should be minimum 1 hr gap between meal and going to bed.
Surgical correction of hiatal hernia is a permanent solution. You can consult surgeon and discuss on it.

Second possibility will be allergy. avoiding particular allergen do reduces cough.

Life long treatment not required. correction of underlying hiatal hernia is required.

Hope I answered your query . Feel free to ask further related query.

Wish you a speedy recovery.

Thank you doctor for the reply.

Here is my history -

I have dust allergy and suffered from cold most of my childhood. Post adolescence that decreased, but iam easily susceptible to weather changes.

In the last one year, all the heavy oily foods are the triggers for my cough.

I take due care to take a gap of atleast 1-1.5 hrs before sleep and dinner.

Is this medication a way to control my problem or do i have to undergo surgery?

Attaching my latest endoscopy report for your reference.

Brief Answer:
Hiatal hernial surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for follow up query.

For Hiatal hernia surgical correction is a better option. For allergy you can get skin prick sensitivity test done. if test shows positive result to any allergen , then immunotherapy helps to get relief from allergic symptoms.
Otherwise montelukast do helps to reduce aggravates and severity of symptoms. Life long treatment may not required, depends on progression of symptoms.

Hope I answered your query. Feel free to ask further related query.
