Question: Hello Dr Rynne
I am 62yr old female. I had a heart attack last week. I will be off work for next 2 weeks. ECG showed ischaemic changes in lateral leads and ST depression in V4 to V6. Troponin was 122. Coronary Angiogram was normal. My question relates to medication. I have been prescribed Verapamil 240SR, Perindopril Arginine 2.5, Rosuvastatin RBx 20mg, and Aspirin 100mg. As I do not have high blood pressure, or high cholesterol, I am concerned to be taking so many 'heavy duty' meds. I am already experiencing most painful constipation. I would appreciate your views.
Best regards

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am sorry to hear about this heart attack you suffered. However, happy because you are recovering great. I will like to see a copy of your results. It can be very tricky talking about high cholesterol and high blood pressure when you have already suffered a heart attack because doctors become more aggressive an treat at lower values than the rest of the population especially in persons with perceived high risk. You are considered being at a very high risk at this time and your treatment would start at even lower values than persons who have never had a heart attack. Ask your doctor about this and hear what he says about you being on these medications.

Constipation is best managed by regular exercise, eating enough fruits, vegetables, fibers and drinking much water. These would help relief these side effects.

My advice is that you continue these medications as prescribed. Send a copy to us an also ask your doctor about his reasons. Eat well for the constipation as outlined above.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Thanks for your prompt reply.
I do not have access to cholesterol/blood pressure details for uploading, however your answer regarding 'aggressive treatment at lower values b/c of perceived high risk' I guess explains why that line-up of meds was prescribed.
I would far prefer to institute lifestyle changes than take medication with side effect risks, however can understand that medico's in this instance probably can't rely on that uncertain undertaking and thus feel the need to intervene swiftly with serious drugs.
Thanks again for your helpful info.

Brief Answer:
Ask him and lets' understand more!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Ask him specifically about the reasons for prescribing the drugs so that we can be very certain and be at peace with it.

Lifestyle measures are an integral part of this management. Whether on drugs or not, you should incorporate this as part of your treatment for best results.

Keep me updated and let me know if there are other issues I should address at this time.

I wish you well.
