Brief Answer:
Needs immediate clinical evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your question.

Right side numbness may be the symptom of stroke (Paralysis).

In such situation, I would have advised to go to ER immediately.
There is a need for immediate neurological examination.
Depending upon neurological evaluation there may be need for Brain imaging like CT or MRI of Brain along with angiography.
Depending upon it further treatment can be planned.

Along with brain imaging following investigations may be advisable -
- Complete Blood Count.
- HbA1c.
- Lipid Profile.
- T3,T4, TSH.
- Renal function test.
- Kidney function test.
- Urine examination (including for ketones).
- ECG & 2DEcho of heart.
- Carotid artery doppler.

Depending upon all above test results, need for following medicines can be considered -
- Antiplatelets : Aspirin & /or clopidogrel.
- Statin : Cholesterol lowering medicine like Atorvastatin.
- Medicine for blood pressure.
- For blood glucose level control :
= Metformin can be considered if kidneys and heart status is normal.
= Along with Metformin other medicines like insulin or other antidiabetic medicines can considered.
- Diet control Calories and Fat restricted diet is advisable.

Hope this helps you.

I just had a Bilateral carotid artery ulstrasound with the following findings. The right common carotid artery peak systolic velocity is 87 cm/second and the internal cartotid artery peak systolic velocity is 216 cm/second. Pre sclerotic right ICA ststolic velocity measures 86, with post dynamic velociity measuring 205 centimeters per second. The systolic velocity ratio is 2.5. On the left, the common is 66 cm/second & internal is 424 cm/second. Pre stenotic velocity is 129 and post is 179 cm/sec. The systolic velocity ratio is 3.1. I am seeing a surgeon tomorrow. Are these numbers alarming?

Hello Doctor,
My Sister aged 75 years has undergone a Carotid & Vertebral Doppler Study and the following are the results:
1. Large Calcified Plaque is seen in left common Carotid bulb leading to 50-60% of blockage.
2. Thrombotic plaque is seen in the Osti of Left Internal Carotid artery leading to 50-60% blockage.
3. Atheromstous plaque is seen right common Carotid artery and external carotid artery.
4.Calcified plaque is seen in right common carotid bulb.
5. Diffuse atheromatous wall changes seen in bi-lateral carotid vessels.
All the arteries show normal pulsations, flow and spectral patters, with optimum peak velocities.

Department of radiology and imaging:
Impression:
1. Calcified plaque is seen in right common carotid bulb leading to 50-60% blockage.
2. Thrombotic plaque is seen in the origin of Left Internal Carotid artery leading to 50-60% blockage.
3. Calcified plaque also seen in right common carotid bulb with no flow limiting disease.
4. Atheromstous plaque is seen right common Carotid artery and external carotid artery with no flow limiting disease.
5. Diffuse atheromatous wall changes seen in bi-lateral carotid vessels.
SUGGESTED NECK ANGIOGRAPHY FOR FURTHER EVALUATION.

My General Physician has advised me to consult a Vascular Surgeon for further treatment.
Please advise me on the Following:
1. Course of action that I should follow.
2. The alternative treatments available
3. The approximate costs involved and the duration for recovery.
4. Good surgeon/hospitals in Chennai, India.
5. Any other important advice.

My mom (74 yrs) 5'3" 110 lbs - did a lifeline screening test for AFIB and something came up strange - heart rate was 053 beats/min - what does this mean? Is the blood going thru very slowly? Also the carotid artery test came up as mild. What can she do to fix this problem? Do not recommend drugs or surgery here, they are NOT an option. Pls advise.
