Brief Answer:
This is commonly seen in a severe sore throat.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. This type of ulceration is seen in viral infections.

2. If the pain is very severe, if the patients is not able to swallow even saliva/ liquids or if the patient has fever and is very unwell, I prefer to start intravenous painkillers, iv fluids and antibiotics. Indoor admission is advised.

3. Throat swabs are sent and antibiotics are given even if the results are negative for bacteria to prevent secondary bacterial infection. Routine blood tests are advised.

4. Other supportive medication such as anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory (including steroids under antibiotic cover), anti-reflux medication and medicated gargles (such as Betadine) usually help the patient recover in a week or so (however bad it looks).

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
