Suggest Remedies For Swelling In Knee While Treating Osteochondroma

default
Posted on Sat, 12 Mar 2016
Question: I have had an osteochondroma above my knee since I was young. 5 years ago I went to the doctor because it started to "snap" when I would make a sideways movement and I wanted to see if it was growing (it wasn''t). Over the last couple of days I have noticed that it is starting to snap when I am walking forward. It doesn't really hurt but doesn't feel normal. It kind of feels "big" like it may be inflamed and just seems uncomfortable when I walk (king of like it could catch on something if I don't turn my leg outward when I take a step). I am a produce farmer and am very active so any small change that may indicate a future compication worries me. Me questions are:
1. Is it normal for the area around an osteochondroma to become aggravated?
2. Does it usually resolve itself or is there something I should be doing?
3. What is the procedure and recovery if they would have to remove it?
4. Should I be concerned that it could turn into a malignancy?
Thanks for the information. I have always worried about a problem with it
putting me out of commision for an extended time and I can't afford that.

Brief Answer:
It is a benign swelling.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
1. There may be a slight increase ion the size of osteochondroma and the surrounding muscles may be stretched causing the discomfort. The occasional aggravation is a common finding.
2. This snapping should resolve on its own or this can be helped by proper physiotherapy. If it is gradually increasing then excision is the best treatment.
3. Usually the removal is done under regional anaesthesia and recovery takes 4-6 weeks.
4. It does not turn into a malignancy. It is a benign swelling.
I hope this answers your query.

Thanks so much! One more thing...I am kind of babying it a bit.
Would it be better to use it as much as possible in order to
strengthen it rather than rest it.

Brief Answer:
Use the limb normally.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
It is better to use your limb as you would use normally to strengthen the muscles surrounding it.
Hope my answer is helpful.
