Question: I have been suffering very severe pain due to fibromyalgia and from the surgigal fusion of 4 vertebrae done 20 yr's ago. Since 2006, I have taken opiates. methadone for 3 years and Morphine 100 mg for 10. I am tired of the pain; plus in 2003 I was diagnosed with major depessive disorder and GAD. Is it possible for me to be free of opiates? I also have bone spurs along my entire spine, and over the past 3 years I have fallen, face down on hard desert floor. I am VERY stressed, as I am the primary care-giver of my 35 yr. old son who has multiple mental illnesses and disorders Advice, please?

Brief Answer:
doesn't fit together.

Detailed Answer:
Ok, fibromyalgia has a few key features, none of which are here:
pain that is all over
pain that is NOT due to something that would cause pain in the place where the pain is
poor efficacy of opiates.

so, I can give information about fibromyalgia but I can't imagine that would be helpful.

First mitigation of narcotic problems:
lowering dose gradually over a long period of time
perhaps trial of a lower potency agent such as suboxone
other non-narcotic modalities focusing on increasing mobility such as physical therapy, braces,
perhaps psychological interventions such as antidepressants, counseling, physical therapy counts for this also.

but in situations in which there is a lot of disk problems, pain tends to stay and being off of narcotics is not likely.
