Posted on Tue, 14 Jun 2016
Question: hey.. i m living in a remote area.. so i had to take abortion pills without any guidance. I used clear kit. I took mifepristone the first day around 9 pm. After 24 hours two tablets of misoprostol, one orally and one vaginally. After half an hour I had severe stomach cramps and vomiting after that. My body temperature was 101 F. I couldnt eat properly the whole day so I thought it may be the reason for fever. till morning heavy bleeding with three very large blood clots (size greater than half of lemon). I stopped bleeding after that. that day also my temperature was fluctuating between 100 and 101 F. after 24 hours of 2nd dose I again took 2 tablets of misoprostol same way. Again my temperature increased to 102 F. I had nutricious diet that day and took medicine for fever. It's the morning after that.. but i m still experiencing no bleeding. what should i do? Is it normal to have this much temperature? I am not married so its hard for me to go to see a doctor in another city. please help.

Brief Answer:
Confirmation to be done through sonogram.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

Firstly, I would like to know how many weeks pregnant you are. The dosage of the medication is usually adjusted depending on the period of gestation.

Secondly, I do not prefer self-administration to induce a medical abortion. This can lead to complications like an incomplete abortion with heavy bleeding, infection, and the grave risk of trying to abort an ectopic pregnancy without prior knowledge.

The dosage of Misoprostol is 800 mcg. in a day, before 9 weeks of gestation. If you did not take the adequate dose, the abortion may be incomplete. Also, since you had heavy bleeding with clots after your fist dose, if it is an early pregnancy, it may have been aborted completely and this could be the reason for no further bleeding after the second dose.

Fever is a side effect of the medication. Yet, you should be aware of infection creeping up in at-home procedures.

In the current scenario, a trans-vaginal sonogram should be done to detect any retained products. Also, you should get a specialist opinion to plan further management. No doctor will reveal your details to any outsider unless absolutely necessary from your health point of view. So, do not be afraid to see a doctor. Staying at home in this situation can lead to infections and more complications. You need proper medical attention.

You also have a history of a previous abortion. Having repeated abortions can lead to infertility in future as the uterus becomes irritable. Instead, please use regular contraception and avoid pregnancy.

Maintain proper genital hygiene and fluid balance. Take adequate rest.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please contact if you need any more suggestions. I will be glad to help.

Brief Answer:
See a specialist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

If you confirmed your pregnancy through a blood test or urine test, you may have induced an abortion. The medications taken to postpone the cycles also delay the period and this should not be mistaken for pregnancy. Now, I would ask you to see a specialist without any more delay to plan further treatment. Self-medication in this situation only means inviting more complications and affecting your health further.

Hope this helps.

regards,
Shanti.V.
