Suggest Remedies For Headaches And Severe Neck Pain

default
Posted on Thu, 8 Sep 2016
Question: I have had a headache for 3 days now. It is located on the right side by my temple area. I also have pain in the back right side on my head above my neck. For the past 2 days it has caused me to vomit. Since 7:30 am this morning I have taken 2 Hydocodone 10-325, imitrex (1/2), 1-100mg Sumatriptan, 1 lorazepam (1mg), 1 Carisoprodol 350 mg. I think am getting a little better as the pain seems a little duller, given me indigestion but the headache is hanging on. My friend gave me a Caffergot & said to take with 8 oz water then eat something but before taking the pill I should check with a Dr because it "may cause death". My question is this, is it safe for me to take this pill or would the drug interactions be detrimental to my health.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that Caffergot should not be used concomitantly with imitrex or sumatriptan, as they both can increase serotonin levels and interact with each other causing possible vessel spasm and even stroke.

So, I would not recommend taking them both. They should be taken separately in a distance of 24 hours from each other.

I would also recommend going to the ER for a physical exam and performing some tests to investigate for the possible cause of headache:

- complete blood count for anemia
- blood electrolytes
- inflammation tests (PCR and sedimentation rate)
- a cervical spine X ray study to exclude possible chronic degeneration.

A brain CT scan or MRI may be needed, especially if abnormal physical examination or if it is the first time in your life that you experience such headache.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
