Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I understand that you are concerned about hair fall.

Hair fall can be due to various reasons. The common causes among males being:

-Androgenetic alopecia, genetically determined patterned hair loss which is characterised by hair loss and thinning mainly from the center part (front, mid and vertex) of the scalp along with receding anterior hair line.

-Telogen effluvium, which may follow a stressful event like an illness or surgery or sudden weight loss. Thyroid abnormalities and nutritional deficiency are also an important cause, however, a large majority are idiopathic.

-Other less common causes include alopecia areata, seborrheic dermatitis/ dandruff, pseudopelade etc

I would like to gather more information from you in order to be able to guide you better..

-How long since you noticed increased hair shedding?
What is the number of hair strands that you lose per day??
Is it less than 50 strands, 50-100 strands Or more than 100 strands?
-Do you have a family history of inceased hair shedding and baldness in father, brother, uncle, male cousins ?
-Do you have any dandruff/ scalp scaling, scalp itching, scalp lesions?
-Is there a preceding history (past 1-3 months from onset of hair fall) of medical illness like high fever, jaundice, malaria Or other similar illness Or surgery?

I'm waiting for your reply.

Brief Answer:
Telogen effluvium superimposed on androgenetic alopecia

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Family history in father suggests that your tendency for hair fall is most likely inherited. This type of hair fall is known as Androgenetic Alopecia.
In androgenetic alopecia, there is gradual thinning and reduced density of hair from the center part of scalp i.e front, mid and vertex of scalp along with recession of anterior hair line.
In addition, history of high fever in october 2015 could be a factor in inducing increased shedding i.e telogen effluvium, which usually starts 1-3 months after a stressful event e.g high grade fever lasting for a few days.
Therefore, your increased hair shedding is most likely a combination of factors i.e due to underlying androgenetic alopecia which has been made worse by recent telogen effluvium.
If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to use Minoxidil 5% solution, 1 ml, twice daily, at scalp. Minoxidil is a non-specific hair growth promoter and it induces transition from telogen to anagen phase (anagen phase is the growing phase of hair growth cycle whereas telogen is the resting phase of hair growth cycle which precedes hair shedding).
In addition I would also suggest Oral finasteride tablets and Oral biotin supplement for you. Finasteride is a specific drug for slowing Or reversing androgenetic alopecia. Biotin is a hair vitamin and also supports hair growth. These are prescription medications and I suggest that you use them under supervision and guidance of a doctor.
In addition I would recommend a ketoconazole antidandruff shampoo for dandruff and itching e.g Nizral shampoo. Use it every alternate days.
You must also consume a wholesome diet, rich in proteins and other nutrients so that the body reserves that were depleted during illness are restored and in turn aid in recovery of hair fall.
