Question: My Son is 4.8 years old and were vomiting whole night and got fever too. Since today morning, we have kept him under very low diet, he had couple of breads and drinking fluid all the time. He had small one in the morning and since then he didn't have any. I am going to buy a hydrolyte drinks for him. He got fever again in the afternoon. we have given him paracetamol 5 ml. Can you please suggest what we should do or what foods, we can provide him to keep away from vomiting and infection.

Brief Answer:
ORS is the mainstay of treatment

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

It seems that your child has a gastrointestinal infection. You need to give him adequate fluids, ORS (oral rehydration solution) or hydrolyte to make up for the lost water and salts. Alongside you need to give paracetamol whenever the temperature rises (at a minimum interval of 3-4 hours). I do not think that the dose is adequate. I need to know the body weight to be able to suggest the correct dose. A dose of 15mg/kg/dose is to be given when required. Alongside, you need to give some antiemetic like Ondem syrup (ondansetron). The infection does not need to be treated separately and is likely to be self limiting.

Thanks for the response. we have already given him ondem once but still he had vomited so we didnt give further and we are giving him paracetamol as last time we had been GP and she suggested to give the paracetamol syrup for fever and the prescribed dose 1.5 ml which has 100 mg/1 ml concentration of paracetamol. She suggested that would be good for him as he may vomit if he drink more water or fluid. My child weight is 19 kgs.

Brief Answer:
Dose inappropriate.

Detailed Answer:
It is good that you have already given Ondem. The vomiting may recur. Also give ondem 15-30 min before feeds. The requisite dose of paracetamol drops (100mg/ml) is 2.8 ml/dose and not 1.5ml for a 19kg child. You need to continue to give plenty of water and fluids.
