Question: Hi My daughter is 8 months old (8.2 kg) .She had fever and loose motion with little blood 3 days back.Doctor suggested 5 ml oflomac m syspension 2 times a day for six day. But After taking this she did not pass any stool from yesterday .So doctor asked to stop this medicine but we notice after stopping again she had fever(100 c).Also we noticed that oflomac m syspension is 30 ml but it finished after taking 4 days so I think we feeded 4ml per dose instead of 5 ml.This is because of the mistake in the measurement while feeding. Is there any problem or what should you do now.Is oflamac m syspension is safe for her or should we continue even though she does not passing stool ?

Brief Answer:
No need to continue Ofloxacin - give zinc supplements

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... you have already completed the course of required antibiotics. No need to give floxacin with metronidazole combination again.

Occassional fever need not be worried about.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).

Regarding diet - Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhea. You can give zinc supplements & ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridges & soups.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.

Thanks doctor. So is that ok because I have completed 30 ml by 4 days by means approximately 4ml per dose instead of 5 ml per dose * 6 days ? I highly appreciate if you kindly confirm the minimum course as per her age (7 months 25 days) and weight(8.2 kgs).Because I am worried about the antibiotic incase it has adverse effect because of incomplete dose or not properly taken.

Thanks in advance

Brief Answer:
You have already given full course - she's better too - don't worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... I understand your concern. You have already completed the full required dose.

Actually speaking ofloxacin is a very broad spectrum antibiotic, so please do not worry about antibiotic resistance.

From next time a simple antibiotic like Cefixime would be enough when there is blood stained stools.

There will not be any adverse effects - do not worry.

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry - low grade fever is common

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I understand your concern. My Suggestions -

1. Low grade fever is common in such dysentery episodes. This might be there for 4-5 days. Moreover temperature should be considered as fever, only if it is more than hundred degrees Fahrenheit.

2. You have already used one full course of broad spectrum antibiotic. There was no need to start on Cefixime. Please stop Cefixime.

3. Nothing serious... please don't worry. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
