Posted on Mon, 19 Dec 2016
Question: About once a week, I wake up with a small quantity of loose stool covering 1-2 square inches on my underwear. It's not solid but more along the lines of dark liquid. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Possible fecal incontinence.

Detailed Answer:
HI,

I have reviewed your information fully. This is suggestive of a possible fecal incontinence. Fecal incontinence is more common with liquid stools. This might happen when the sphincter controlling the anal opening is weakened. Also, this might simply happen following a diet that predisposes to loose stools and consequently this. I will suggest that you embark on avoiding foods that let to liquid stools and always empty the rectum as soon as you have the urge. Given the frequency and surrounding circumstances, it is no emergency and I will suggest that you follow up with a GI for more evaluation if this persists.

I wish you well. Keep me posted on your evolution and outcome.
