Posted on Fri, 29 Jul 2016
Question: Good morning Doctor, my question is this, I have enlarged and painful lymph nodes in my neck, One is located below and behind my left ear. The second is near the jawline on my right side. I am getting concerned about this. I have seen my GP and was prescriped antibiotic in hopes that this would help. I have decreased pain after 4 days of this treatment. There has been no reduction of size and is still tender. I do remember having a sore throat a week or so before I noticed these lumps. I believe a had a fever with headache about 10 days ago. Had pain in my eyeballs also. Should I be overly concerned about my condition at this point. To be honest, I feeling a little scared about cancer.

Brief Answer:
no need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that you have some concern over some lymph nodes in your neck. Since you noticed these lymph nodes after having infection the most likely reason is that these lymph nodes are trying to help fight off the infection. If they were from a cancer then there would be no preceding infection. The lymph nodes also would feel different to the doctor if they were cancer. The fact that they are painful is another indication that these LN are benign. Cancerous LN are not painful. I would recommend that you complete your antibiotics and wait an additional month before you seek any additional evaluation. It may take that long for a benign LN to resolve. But if you still feel concerned then see your provider earlier and tell him your concerns.
