Suggest Remedies For Difficulty In Conception

Question: Hi,

i'm already a paying member via this site & my membership runs until July 2016.

I am 47 & although still menstruating, i'm finding it almost difficult to get pregnant by my husband.

I gave birth to my only child (son), back in 1991, when i was 22 & never went on to have more children, bec i hadn't met the right man & choosing to leave my ex & raise my son as a single parent was a full on job, so i opted against more children.

Now in my maturity, i've met & married, the man i wish i'd met 25 yrs ago, however, didn't.

We would love to try for a baby & we know a lot already, so far as donor eggs & the odds of natural conception are concerned.

I would like to leave donor eggs as the very last resort/option though. I have done a fair bit of research since & have found out that in different parts of the US, there are professional Infertility Specialists, that are prepared to give older ladies a go, by way of using their own eggs & not donor.

There have been quite a few positive outcomes, bec there are many new drugs/treatments on the market now, that can really increase the chance of natural conception in an older woman.
I am also aware, that most of these treatments are costly.

What are your thoughts regarding this & what should my husband & i do right now, to get the ball rolling?
We've already wasted almost 2 precious years unfortunately.

Thank you & regards,

Brief Answer:
2 options

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns about infertility.

There are 2 options infront of you :

1) Using donor eggs is best way forward and I consider this to be first and cheaper option.

2) Other option is to get your ovarian reserve tested by tests like AMH, FSH and Antral Follicle Count. If reserve has any oocytes left you can choose to go ahead with your own eggs and use technology like PGS (preimplantation genetic Screening) to identify if all embryos are normal. You can opt to get normal embryos transferred.

3) If ovarian reserve shows no eggs are in your body, there is no way to increase egg count with any medicines or procedure as this is one time gift.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

Hi Dr,

thank you very much for your quick reply. I appreciate it.

I have read everything you wrote & i will take on board, what you've suggested.

I have to ask you, even if i am still menstruating, could i still have very low egg reserves @ my age, 47?

I have always been told by Drs & professionals, that so long as a woman menstruates regularly, then she must still have eggs remaining, otherwise she'd have well & truly gone through menopause.

What are your thoughts?
So long as i am still menstruating, is there always a very slim chance/possibility of pregnancy, whether by natural methods, or by way of using my own eggs for potential fertilisation, if they're of viable quality?

Thank you & i look forward to hearing from you.

Brief Answer:
Menstrual is not related to egg reserve

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I know you must have heard all types of advice on Internet and off Internet.

Regular menstrual cycle is not related to the quality or quantity of egg reserve.

Regular menstrual cycle only indicates that your hormonal axis is intact.

You need to follow the advice I have given earlier for conceiving.
