Suggest Precautions To Take While Doing Various Exercises

Question: Hi, I am 60 years old and overweight though no longer obese thanks to changing my eating habits. I have chronic spinal pain following a bush walking accident in the 1980's, though my pain specialist tells me it is "pain memory" rather than there being anything specifically wrong with my back now. I also have moderate arthritis in my left shoulder and an impinged tendon. Have had one cortisone injection under ultrasound but the effects were relatively short lived.
I am finally ready to start exercising again and have joined a local gym. In addition to the normal activities, they offer tai chi, yoga, pilates and beginners cardio. What special precautions do you recommend I take to avoid exacerbating either my shoulder injury or back pain?

Brief Answer:
Warming up is a must.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The exercises and other normal activities are right now good for you and will help in maintaining the normal tone of your muscles thus reducing the pain that you are having.
During the exercise just be careful to start with 10 minutes warming up exercises and start increasing the exercises gradually. Do not do too much too early. Do not go for any painful activities and too much stretching of shoulders above your head.
Initially your muscles may be painful for a few days which can be relieved with hot fomentation. In case there is any persistent pain then stop the exercise and relax for a few days. Do explain about your pain to the trainer so that the exercises can be modified accordingly.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
