Brief Answer:
The progression can be slowed.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

She is 65 and has Alzheimer's dementia. It's common in early dementia to have forgetfulness in day to day things, difficulty in recognising the paths, sometimes difficulty in finding names of known individuals. The memory loss can't be reversed but the progression can be slowed.

Her blood pressure should be maintained in the normal range. Her blood sugar levels should be in the normal range. You can get her routine blood investigations (CBC, LFT, RFT, Lipid profile) and MRI brain done. MRI brain should show age-related cerebral atrophy. If there is any infarction in the brain or ischemic changes then that should be treated first.

Drugs like Donepezil and Memantin can be used to halt the progression of dementia. Cognitive enhancers like Piracetam can be used also. She should be given Vitamin E supplements which will help in improving the cognition.

I'd also advise you to ask her to play any brain stimulation games, this can be chess, crossword or sudoku etc. This also helps a lot with dementia.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and Take care.

Brief Answer:
Donepezil can Memantin are safe.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Donepezil can be started with 5 mg once a day and then after a week the dose can be increased to 5 mg twice a day. The drug is relatively safe and is easily tolerated. Dizziness, nausea and some times diarrhea. The drug can cause slight difficulty in sleep.

Memantin doses are also in 5-10 mg range. The drug is also well tolerated. In high doses, this can precipitate psychotic symptoms. Otherwise, overall it's safe.

Piracetam is used in 800 mg once to twice a day. The drug is also well tolerated. There are no serious side effects if taken in prescribed doses.

She can be given Evian 400 mg which is a good vitamin E supplement and is found in most shops.

Please visit a psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs.

Hope I have answered your query.
