Suggest Medication To Help With Kidney Stones

Posted on Tue, 16 Dec 2014
Question: I have 2 small stones ( leass than 2 mm ) in the right kidney found through CT scan.

I had a large stone of 5 mm which passed out last November after I took the Stonvile capsules for 6 days - 4 a day.

Today, I have the same symptoms which I had 12 months ago - severe stomach pain, ballooning stomach, lower back pain and slight head ache.

Do you recommend I continue to take 4 Stonvile capsules a day ? But advise me what pain killer I should take to reduce stomach pain.

Brief Answer:
Potassium citrate is better than stonville

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Kidney stones can pass spontaneously if they are less than 7 mm, though larger stones up to 10 mm have also been passed. I would recommend Potassium citrate instead of stonville as its is known to be helpful in passing a stone, preventing calculi and concretions.

The accuracy of an X ray KUB and Ultrasound combined is equal to a CT KUB. You may get an X ray KUB and an Ultrasound abdomen done to look for the location of the stone and whether there is any associated hydronephrosis or not. Renal function via creatinine levels should also be checked. If there is failure to progress in terms of the stone and pain worsens or persists then surgical options should be considered.

ESWL ( Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy ), if stone is in Kidney and URS ( Ureteral Removal of Stone ) , if its in the ureter.

The pain of kidney stone is quite severe and most appropriately , E.R management should be preferred, Diclofenac sodium , No Spa ( drotaverine ) , PPIs like Esomeprazole should be given. The PPI and anti spasmodics will cover the stomach bloating and pain which you specified.

wishing you best of health

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.

1). Are there tablets for potassium citrate ? Can I buy them from a chemist ? Would a health store have them ?

2). Which tablets do you recommend to reduce stomach bloating. Should I take oxycodeine ( percosete ) to reduce pain ?

3). Today, I took 2 table spoons of lime juice mixed with 4 table spoons of olive oil. It seems to have helped. Pls comment.

Brief Answer:
Yes, its available, PPI plus antispasmodic , a better choice

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Yes , potassium citrate are available in the form of tablets. Here are a couple of brands i.e Nutracit K and Urocit K. You may ask your chemist if they are available over the counter or not.

I would not recommend oxycodeine ( percosete ) or the lime and olive combo , as much more effective treatments exist. Hyoscine butylbromide in combination with a PPI ( Proton Pump inhibitor ) would be a better option. Please consult your G.P before taking any medication.

Thanks.
