Question: My daughter, ten years old, had a door slam on her toe today. So far I cleaned it with peroxide, put bacitracin and covered with a bandage. She says there is pain and does not really let me touch it aside from cleaning it. I was thinking I should try to cut the nail but i dont want to add any pain. Is there anything i can give her for the pain and what do u suggest doing with nail tip- leaving it alone or cutting it off?

Brief Answer:
Have to cut the projecting nail part, give Ibuprofen if it suits her.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and pictures.
To recapitulate: 10 years daughter - door slammed on toe today - peroxide, bacitracin - bandage - pain+ - ? cut nail - wants to know if anything can be given to her for pain and what to do with tip of nail...

First of all, please let me tell you that you did the best.
10 years can be given Ibuprofen safely.
(Do not give anything that contains oxycodone or so).
Elevation of the foot above the heart level will help reduce the edema and pain too.
Give her Ibuprofen or so if it suits her and if needed.
Put a gauze soaked in Hydrogen peroxide on the nail, it will become softer and then cut the corner which is projecting out. This will be sufficient.
Bacitracin is good.
You may also use liquid solution povidone iodine, apply 3 to 4 times a day over a few turns of bandage on the toe to protect it from touch and pain.
Also check if she needs a booster of tetanus toxoid.
I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
