Suggest Medication For Severe Back Pain

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: I have been mislead in that doctors have to refuse to administer vicodin with valium for severe back pain. what if the personal benefit to me is worth the risks and what are they if not abused? I have heard that you could stop breathing. Right now the way my intense pain affects my life I am willing to take any risk. I suffer and am not afraid to take these drugs

Thank you for telling me the truth

Brief Answer:
TENS is a suitable alternative for complicated pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX.

I understand your query and concern.

Severe back pain in your case can be treated by Vicodin as per your wants I understand.

Doctors in your case might have gone against the combination of valium plus Vicodin only with the due consideration that it can cause serious respiratory depression being fatal at times.
Considering your age this decision might have been taken.

Instead you can go for potential alternative therapies like Transcutaneous nerve stimulation/TENS and Alcohol injections into the nerve roots.

These methods are even more efficient and safe in relieving your back pan.

Consult your treating physician with regards to above.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Valium + vicodin can be taken under high risk consent

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX.

I understand your concern.

In case if you have not responded to TENS then you can be managed with Valium and Viacodin with careful monitoring of your respiratory function,

The major side effects of this combination are respiratory failure, moderate to severe neurocognitive disturbances along with renal electrolyte disturbances.

Hence this combination is avoided in most patients.

But in case if the risk benefit ratio is clearly understood by you, the drug combination can be given under expert critical management care.

You have all the patient rights to receive right choice of effective management.

Thank you.
