Suggest Medication For Persistent Dry Cough

default
Posted on Fri, 16 Dec 2016
Question: I am having dry cough for more than 1 months. Approximately every 5 to 10 minutes, I do cough. I am having thyroid and diabetes. I do feel like it originates from throat and I could feel vibration on throat and sometimes on chest as well. Could you please suggest me any medicine. I do suffer from this frequent cough 2-3 times a year, but this is the maximum time it stayed. I took some common medicine but that didn't work for me this time.

Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
It can be an allergic cough

Detailed Answer:
Hello

From your history it looks like that you are having an allergic cough. Please do not ignore this because if untreated, you may develop asthma.

The best thing would be to meet a chest physician, who may ask you to do a test called as pulmonary function test. Once the test is done, a diagnosis can be made and you can be treated appropriately.

In my patients i would also ask for a chest xray to look at the lung status.

I would normally ask my patients to start on tablet montelukast and levocetrizine 10 mg combination to be taken at night and Syrup benadryl [dry] 2 teaspoon twice a day. I would also advice them to take steam inhalation 2 to 3 times a day.

Please discuss this with your doctor.
