Brief Answer:
High fibre, moderate calorie diet with less fats.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

A healthy diet is very important after any heart surgery, as it aids the recovery process. Best is to divide the meals into smaller and frequent portions to get the maximum benefits from the meal. It helps, as the appetite is compromised in many cases.

The following considerations would help you plan the best diet:

•     Take more fruits and vegetables, these are rich in fiber and provide important nutrients like vitamins and minerals.
•     Use only low fat milk and its products. It is also important to avoid too much refined products.
•     Use less sugar and sugar containing foods.
•     Limit the intake of caffeine and if you drink or smoke, then it is the time to completely stop their use to help your heart recover faster.
•     It is important to reduce the salt intake and that can be achieved by observing the following:
Read the labels to check the sodium content of the food item.
Stop adding table salt in the food.
Avoid salted salads, pickles and papads.
Packaged and preserved foods have the sodium based preservatives. The intake of these should be avoided as far as possible.
Avoid taking the ready to eat snacks. These are generally from bakery, and thus are loaded with sodium.

•     Fat is and important nutrient to consider. While some amount is important, you must completely avoid the animal fats, like butter, ghee, cream etc. Vegetable oils are safe when taken in small portions (maximum 3 - 4 tsp. per day). Canola, sunflower, corn and olive avoid are good. Avoid Palm and hydrogenated fat.
•     If you take non veg- then limit its intake to lean meat. Chicken, fish and egg whites are safe. Limit the intake of oily fish to once a week, and take small / medium portions.

Apart from diet, exercises are also important as it helps in faster recovery and also offers other benefits like better sleep, improved appetite, improved nutrient utilization and weight management. As you have already started the exercises, make sure that you continue doing them for as long as you feel comfortable. Never avoid taking rest if you feel breathless or stressed at any point while walking or swimming.

Make sure that you take a Fruit ( 1 whole fruit like apple or orange OR ¾ cup Cut fruits like papaya or watermelon) and a glass of plain water at room temperature before starting the walk / swimming this would provide the necessary energy that you need to carry out the exercise. Similarly, upon finishing the exercises, again take 2 glasses of plain water followed by 3 dates and 2 boiled egg whites.
