Suggest Dosage For Prednisone

Question: I am concerned about beginning to take PREDNISONE ORAL TABLETS FOR 10 DAYS. I went to the ear nose and throat doctor because my seasonal allergies lasted for 2 weeks and my sinus was painful headaches. I have had infected sinus before ,only maybe every other year in spring, but this faLL WAS WORSE BECAUSE fLONASE HAD NO EFFECT. bENADRYL RELIEVED THE PRESSURE AND ASPIRIN THE HEADACHE,BUT I THOUGHT IF i could try another decongestant or if I needed an antibiotic to get better. So he says I should continue Flonase. I have in the past had to switch from Claritin to Allegra after 2 years because of rebound it is no longer effective. Why is Benadryl not o.k. if it works instead of Flonase which doesn.t? I only took the drowsy Benadryl at night and non-drowsy daYTIME. I haven't had a blood test recently, so I don't know if I could be prediabetic like my spouse, but it is dangerous to take Prenisone if you have diabetes ? I do have swollen ankles and I am 30 lbs. overweight . I an 64 years old. Let me know what I should do. Get a blood test first? Thank You!

Brief Answer:
Short term corticosteroid won't be a problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Allergic episodes if it is mild to moderate then it will get relief from antihistamine like benadryl. For allergic rhinitis which is not relieved by antihistamine corticosteroid sprays like flonase will be helpful.

In your case these are not working so a short course of oral corticosteroid like methyl prednisolone will be helpful to clear up the allergic episode. As it is for short period like 10 days you don't need to worry about the side effects. If you take it for long term it can be a risk for getting diabetes. But better to check your blood sugar levels now as corticosteroid can shoot up sugar levels to high.

Have a follow up with your treating doctor after completing the course also.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
