Suggest Dosage For Oxycodone, MS Contin And Soma

Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: My husband Doctor prescribed XXXXXXX oxcycodone and MS contin to my husband. He has been taking these medications for a few months. He was in a car accident a couple of days ago while heading to work. My four year old son was in the car with him and the last thing my husband remembers is putting him in the car set. Thank god no one was hurt but he is being charged for under the influence of narcotics abuse. When he was in the hospital he acted like he had a head injury or really drunk. He was not in his right mind. The Doctor told me he was on enough narcotics to kill a horse. They don't even prescribe cancer patients this much. He was taking the medication as recommended, which I made sure of by counting everything out when I got home that day. The hospital told me, even though he taking his medication as recommended, it is the amount he was prescribed is consider narcotic abuse. (I hope that made sense) I have listened to several people option on the medications from nurses , people who have taken it themselves and the emergency Dr. What I understand is that these medications should of never been use for long term use, chronic pain and should of never been prescribed together. It was a recipe for addiction and death. My husband is scared, he does not understand what happen, he has been taking the medications for a few months and never had a problem. Why know? Why did the Doctor not tell us about the side effects when we asked. Looking back the doctor was pushing the MS contin and started him at 60mg because of insurance reasons. I am scared because my husband might go to jail and he does not remember a thing. I don't know what to do.....

Brief Answer:
get records

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
I do not know why your husband's doctor did not explain to him the danger of these medications. What you need to do now is get a copy of his medical records from the doctor that was prescribing these medications. He should have been warned not to take the medications and drive. He needs to get tapered off of the medications if possible and make sure that he has a clear head if he needs to go to court over this matter. His physician may need to testify about why and how he prescribed the medications. It is very important for you to get a copy of his medical records from this doctor as soon as possible. This is all you can do at this point. Document what you did as far as counting he pills to demonstrate that he was only taking what was prescribed. The medical records should document that he was not informed about the risk and dangers of driving while on these medications.
I wish you the best and let me know if you have further questions.

The Doctor knew that my husband needed to be able to drive to work. Many people have their own option when it come to pain medication, you agree with it or you don't. Also I understand that people react different when it comes to medication. My question is this, was these medications even safe ( XXXXXXX oxcycodone and MS contin) for anyone to take all at once? I need facts not options because emotions can be mixed into it. Was this a poor decision on the Doctor side or was my husband just a special case. If he did not get help that day he could of died.

Brief Answer:
people do take these doses

Detailed Answer:
Many people with chronic pain do take doses like this of pain medication and sometimes even higher doses. Usually they are started on a lower dose and then tapered up to reach pain control. I do think it was a mistake to tell someone that they could drive while taking these doses of medications. All three medications are very sedating and even if you are used to them this dose of medication would impair your reflexes.

I tried to taper my husband off his medication but his body no longer reacts like how he use to. I tried cutting it in half and even less but he acts like he is high or drunk every time he takes one. We are doing it cold turkey. The question is what can we do to help with the withdrawals that I can buy over the counter? I want something natural. I read that Benadryl helps but I don't care for the side effects. He needs to stay clear headed. I don't trust his Doctor, so I can't ask him because I worry he might give him something that might cause more problems. I don't like this method but I feel like there is no other choice. I do understand the risk and I got ride of all the medication (keeping it was causing to much stress for me, I need to stay strong for him), so there is no going back. Could you please help me. I want my husband back.

Brief Answer:
nothing over the counter

Detailed Answer:
There is nothing over the counter that can help with this. You need a doctor to write a prescription for something to help him get off the medication. The most commonly used medication is clonidine but this must be done under strict medical supervision as it can lower blood pressure to a dangerous level. If he does withdraw without assistance, he will suffer greatly but it will not kill him. It is miserable to go through so I suggest that you find him another doctor that is willing to help with this. There is really no over the counter solution for this.
