default
Posted on Wed, 7 May 2014
Question: 1. As currently my wife is suffering with little weakness, is the diet that is being followed by her sufficient as a mother? 2. If not, what is the diet she should follow to make her look/feel healthier and fit(Can you please list down any specific items with quantity)? 3. We are following vegeterianism from couple of years and as she is looking weaker, we are getting suggestions from all the quarters(mostly relatives) to have NON-VEG(especially meat). How correct is this suggestion and what is the alternate diet that she should prefer instead of NON-Veg?

Brief Answer: DIET EXPLAINED. Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for writing to us with your health concern. Most mothers gain weight during pregnancy, and struggle to lose that weight. Let me answer your questions one by one - 1. Is the ' weakness ' perceived or real ? The stress due to sleepless nights and taking care of an infant can result in the mother feeling tired all day. Does she actually need to increase her diet ? What is her weight and height and hemoglobin levels ? 2. She should be taking daily calcium, vitamin D and iron supplements for atleast 3 months after childbirth. Not taking this an result in weakness 3. A vegetarian diet also can provide all nutrition if it is planned carefully, only vegetarians have to be extra careful about including proper amount of protein in the diet which non vegetarians obtain easily. Following are the foods to be included in her diet = 1. Oats - make oat porridge or daliya. Enhance the nutritional value with raisins, almonds, bananas, walnuts, dates etc. It reduces constipation and provides energy. 1 - 2 servings per day. 2. Lots of dal / pulses - Make sure to flavour the preparations with ginger, turmeric, ajwain , garlic as all these spices provide immunity and energy. 3 - 4 helpings per day, each of 100 gms. 3. Make sure to have plenty of green vegetables - palak, methi, bathua, leek, lettuce, broccoli, lotus stem, green beans. Atleast 500 gm of fresh green leafy vegetables. 4. Atleast 2 - 3 generous helpings of dairy products - either tofu, paneer, cheese, cottage cheese, curd, yoghurt. 5. 3 glasses of skimmed milk per day. 6. Concentrate on increasing intake of protein - if possible, 2 eggs a day, or 3 servings of paneer / tofu, dals, pulses, beans such as rajma, fava beans etc. 7. She can take protein powder such as Mothers Horlicks 3 tablespoons in a glass of milk daily. Also mild exercise in the form of yoga / walking can be started. Ask her to have small frequent 5 - 6 meals per day instead of 2 big meals. Have a heavy fulfilling breakfast. Take lots of fluids - water, coconut water, lime juice, kanji, buttermilk as it helps to enhance lactation. All the best Please feel free to discuss further

Hi XXXXXXX Thank you very much for the quick and detailed response. Here are my answers for the questions raised by you--> The Weakness is perceived but not real as she is almost maintaining good or high BMI. Diet wise she is not taking enough food. That is for sure. So she can start following the diet suggested by you. Coming to Supplements-->She is currently having B-Complex(assuming it as Vitamin-D supplement) and Iron supplements it seems. So what would you suggest as Calcium supplement? Diet-->a) Can you suggest an alternative to "Mothers Horlicks" as she had some allergy with Horlicks from childhood? b) Also keeping in view that we are South Indian people, would you like to change anything in the diet suggested by you or it would be fine? c)My wife and her parents are actually worried if there are any side effects on Baby by following the diet. Can you please clarify whether if there are any?

Brief Answer: TAKE CARE Detailed Answer: As she is maintaining BMI on the higher side, she is definitely taking enough food ( calories ). She can make healthier food choices to correct the weakness. Yes, calcium and vitamin D supplement is a must. B complex does NOT contain Vitamin D. She can go for Protinex protein powder. Am sure being South Indians, you can include the food items mentioned in your various recipes. There are no side effects on the baby as long as the mother is eating healthy and maintaining a healthy BMI and taking enough supplements.

--------------------Detailed information on current diet, medication being followed by both mother and baby and problems being faced--------------- One more thing what I forget mentioning earlier is that my wife used to maintain heavy BMI before delivery. But now she lost atleast 10-15kgs and appearing weak even though the current weight might be near to ideal for her height as she is short. The current diet followed by my wife in detail --> Morning ...> 1. breakfast including 4 idly/4 dos 2. A glass of milk Afternoon ..> 1. lunch having rice with rasam, Ridge gourd curry, buttermilk(sometimes all 3 and sometimes with only one of them ) Dinner ..> Same as lunch Nothing else she is having in diet apart from the food items mentioned above. We are worried about the baby's health because he is not going for motion regularly(daily) and also atleast 5 times he vomits the milk(either after 10min/1hour of having milk) daily. Signs are that while vomiting he is also producing phlegm. We also noticed that he is feeling inconvenient(some stomach problem...... and he does not sleep well) when he does not go for the motion for long time like 2days. Apart from breastfeeding(almost 10times per day with around 2hours gap between each time) current medication being followed for the baby is--> 1. Visyneral zinc drops - daily 3drops in the morning 2. 2.5ml of Duphalac Syrup for the baby to go for motion daily in the evening 3. Dulcoflex tubes - if the baby did not go for the motion for 2 days. After the breastfeeding, she lifts her up so that he can digest easily and once she feels that his digestion of milk is complete she makes him sleep by positioning flat on the bed. In every one out of two occurrences after this exercise the baby is vomiting. ------Can you respond to below queries based on the above information?------ 1)Can you please let us know whether she can have the diet that you suggested based on the above mentioned facts about her current health and baby's problems? I meany any sideeffects on the baby(as he is vomiting and had motion problem) if she goes for the diet you mentioned? 2)Do you feel any side effects of the medicines being used above for the baby? 3)Can you please provide your valuable suggestions/medication for the baby problems of motion and vomiting? If possible, can you suggest any natural way to solve the above problems?

Brief Answer: AS BELOW Detailed Answer: 1. Yes she is taking limited food items in the diet, and having just 3 meals a day. She should have 5 - 6 smaller meals, including more vegetables, fruits, nuts, dairy products, protein in the diet. That will improve her nutrition and well being and also provide nourishment to the baby. Effects on vomiting and motion of the baby will only be beneficial, as taking wide variety of foods will stimulate the gut. 2. Stop giving him duphalac daily. It is habit forming. Remaining medications are fine, also try giving him little boiled water with katori and spoon for good motions. 3. Regarding voviting, makes ure she feeds in propped up position. After feeding, keep baby on the shoulder till he burps, it can take upto 15 - 20 minutes. Then place him on an inclined surface, ( 2 - 3 small baby mattresses folded and kept under his head and neck ), avoid keeping him totally flat. Make sure he is not being overfed or force fed, let him stop feeding and give the mother the cue to stop feeding. All the best Please feel free to discuss further.
