Suggest Diet Restrictions For Diverticulitis

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Sep 2015
Question: I was diagnosed recently with diverticulosis. I have done a little research to find out what it is, now I need to know what type of foods I need to avoid and what should I be eating. I received a call about the test results and I want see a doctor until Sept. 18th. From what I've read, I need to change my diet fast and I would probably feel better and have less pain. What should I be eating and drinking? Thank you for whatever advice you can give me.

Hi and thank you for asking.

I read carefully all your concerns and I understood your query.
The diet for diverticulitis changes depending to the severity of the inflammation and disease.
So if you have acute mild to moderate diverticulitis I recommend as follows :

1. You need to use liquid diet for a couple of days like water, fresh fruit juice, broth , gelatin, ice chips, tea.

2.After that if you feel better and the symptoms starts to improve than you can use low fiber diet who consist :
white bread, fish , eggs, milk , yogurt, cheese, white rice, vegetables like potatoes, plenty of water, fruits without skin, banana.

You will continue with these diet till you feel good and the symptoms are disappeared. If you are improved than you can start to use your normal diet reached with high fiber foods.
It is important to know that if you have diverticulitis apart the diet you need to start antibiotic use, probiotic and stool softeners if needed.

wish you all the best.

I read that milk and yogurt will make it worse. I an already eating what you listed in your response. I also eat a lot of leafy green vegetables. I don't take laxatives because I don't get constipated and need medicine. I had at least 4 bowel movements yesterday morning before I ate anything. I have loose bowels at times but I don't have to take anything because it stops after about 3 bowel movements. At times I have a lot of gas that I can't control, that is so embarrassing. It happens whether I eat or not. I purchased some probiotics but I don't know if I got the right kind or strength. Is there a list of foods I need to avoid? I have lost at least 60lbs without trying. In 2013 I lost 50lbs in about 4 months and I started losing again May of this year. I had to be persistent before my primary doctor referred me to a specialist. Do I need an antibiotic because this disease is some type of infection or virus?
Thank you.

Hi back,

As i said earlier to you milk and yogurt can be used after the first stage of treatment (first stage consist of liquid diet). The only contraindications for yogurt and milk is if you doesn't tolerate well milk products.

As i said above there's a list of foods that you may eat during the second stage of treatment. Please follow the above mentioned suggestions.

Yes you may need a course of antibiotics. However, since this may have unwanted side effects you should discuss with your treating doctor.

Hope this was of help!
