Suggest Diet For A 10 Month Old Baby To Avoid Rashes On Mouth

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Apr 2015
Question: Hello,

My 10 month old daughter is 14 kg in weight. She has been exclusively breastfed for first 6 months and even now, she is not very fond of solids. Thus, doctor told me to cut on feeding and give her more of solids. He told me to introduce packet/cow milk in oats/suji etc. Also, he told me to ass beans and ladies finger in her food to avoid constipation.

Since making these two changes, she has been having stools around 4 times a day. Earlier, it used to be twice and not watery. But now, she has been passing watery stool. So, I stopped giving her outside milk and bhindi. But, today she vomited a lot in the afternoon, but she did not seem to be bothered about it.

Also, she has been having this very tiny red rashes around her mouth, They come and go now and then.

Please can you give me your opinion about any problem which she might be having. I am ensuring safety while making her food and all. But she suddenly seems to be not tolerating her solids well.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
looks like cow's milk allergy

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Cow's milk or packet milk is safe only after 12 months.
If started early it can cause milk allergy which can be the reason for your baby's vomiting and rash around the mouth.
Vegetables which you are giving are very safe
Infact all vegetables can be given safely.
It helps in fiber content which is necessary for normal passage of stools.
My suggestions
1. Stop cow's milk
2. Temporary solution for milk could be lactose free formula like isomil.
3. Continue vegetables and fruits.
4. Oral rehydration solutions to keep her hydrated if stools increase which can happen if this happens to be a viral infection.
Ensure she passes urine atleast six times a day.
Wishing your child good health

Thank you for your reply.

Since yesterday, I am noticing her stools are greenish in color with a little curdly texture. I am not giving her much solids for the past 3/4 days except khichdi in lunch/dinner and one banana. Also, I noticed something like mucus in her stool. She is continuing to pass stool 4/5 times a day.

Should I take her to some doctor? I am skeptical as I do not want her to take antibiotics.

Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
no need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
If you have stopped cow's milk and started lactose free formula like I mentioned before, no need to worry.
No need for antibiotics.
Ensure she drinks enough liquids including oral rehydration solutions.
If urine output is good no need to worry for mucus in stools
It does take time for stools to change after stopping cow's milk.

Thank you for your quick reply. I have not started the formula, but am breastfeeding as usual. Can I give her oats/suji cooked in the lactose free formula or water?

Also, can I continue to give her boiled egg/fish or should wait for few days?

Brief Answer:
yes you can

Detailed Answer:
1. Oats suji - yes you can give in water or formula. No problem.
2. Wait for a few more days before starting egg or fish. This is mainly to give bowel time to normalise.

Thanks Doctor.

Also wanted to inform you that my baby has developed some skin rash in the thigh and inner side of her elbow (pic attached) there are some red spots along with tiny bumps in the skin. However I am applying calamine lotion but wanted to understand if this is something I need to worry about. Can you please suggest if there is any cream I can apply for this.

I am bit worried as I was reading some where the delayed reaction of outside milk can result into skin eczema :( . From the picture do you think anything like that can happen? Also is skin eczema curable or a permanent disorder in the skin? I am really scared now. I have given her outside packet milk for 3 days only (1st day 150 ml and 100 ml for the next 2 days and then stopped completely).

Do we need to do a skin allergy test (to see if she is allergic to lactose ) or this will subside within few days? Please help...

Thanks and Regards

Brief Answer:
Don't worry. Will settle down

Detailed Answer:
I have seen the pictures.
They do look like eczema.
But don't worry usually it is transient.
Will settle down in a few days.
I usually prescribe mild ointments like desonide for such patients twice daily for a week.
Allergy testing for milk can be done after one year of age if symptoms recur.
For next 2 months avoid cow's or packet milk completely.
Nothing to worry. This eczema is not permanent.
Usually milk allergy disappears as child grows and by three years it is very rare to see milk allergy.
