Suggest Ayurvedic Treatment For Fungal Infection On Toe

Question: Hello.I am concerned about my right big toe. IT appears as though it has permanent damage. First off, I was recommended by someone I met at a past job to try out this nail shop. I really refused it, because I explained that it wasn't sanitary. He insisted, so I went, and I received a toe nail fungus on that big toe. Anyway, I started to use otc things for it, bought at the drug store. It didn't help. Then it got worse and started to spread to, 2 more toes on the right foot. I have also started to use tea tree, and apple cidar vinegar at home, (home remedies). It appears to get better from this, but I am wondering how long this is supposed to take? Then it got stomped on it so hard, that it fell off.. Then it had difficulty growing back. It grew back half way. It appeared as though it was trying to grow ingrown. I tended to it alot. I filed it whenever it got to that point. Then another nail grew over that one. Then it fell off again. This happened 2 more times. It finally after all these years, grew back, and is staying put. The fungus is still there though, now on 3 toes. I don't like taking medications. What do you recommend for fungus? And, 2ndly - what do u recommend for it to be more stronger?

Brief Answer:
Ayurveda Management

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern and nail fungus is more common in people above age of 60 but at your Age (45), one has to exclude diabetes or any known Immunocompromised disease which might be an aggravating factor for the same, and one should keep following things in mind:

1. It is not caused due to poor hygiene (as you have rightly mentioned) but warm/wet place in shoes is ideal environment for it t grow?

2. Since toe nail grow at a slower pace thus treatment is more difficult and longer.

3. As nail fungus is contagious thus avoid touching other nails with your hand (as it can spread easily)

4. Keep your feet/shoe dry and avoid walking bare foot and change socks frequently (switch ro cotton socks)

5. Wear proper fitting shoes since tight one cause overcrowding and ingrowing of tails ( Trimming the nailmin straight line is best management)

6. Since disease is chronic, thus in Ayurveda one specific drug 'Gandhak' i. e. (SULPHUR) which helps kill fungus and stop recurrence is preferred.

. Mix small amount of sulphur with coconut oil and make a thick paste and apply to affected nail (at night) and wash in morning.

7. Eat more of probiotic and diet which helps boost Immune system i. e. Immunimodulators.

8. Other drugs which can be made available through prescription/online is/are:
. Mahamarichyadi taila
. Neem taila.

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back.

As explained earlier that toe nail grows slower than finger nails, thus

1. Since nails are made of protein 'keratin' which constitute the hair, thus take protein rich diet (eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds, spinach, green vegetables, protein powder/shakes.

2. Take BIOTIN (Vitamin H) rich diet: whole grains, carrots, tomatoes, salmon, almonds, cauliflower, cucumber, milk, soybeans, strawberries, lentils, oats and walnuts.

3. Avoid harsh chemicals to nails (whether working or cleaning)

4. Take more of antioxidants (green tea and Vitamin E is/are ideal)

5. Regular Trimming/cutting of nail (in straight line) helps them to grow faster and keep them hydrated.

6. Early morning Vitamin D (from sunlight) helps nail grow faster and later stronger (appropriate exposure is required)

Brief Answer:
Application of Gandhak (sulphur)

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back.

1. The said oil has to be applied thrice daily and make sure that it is being applied regularly with special care to the crevices of the nail.
2. As said earlier about slow growth of toe nail the treatment is long and usually 3 month therapy is necessary, thereafter on alternate day.
