Suggest Ayurvedic Treatment For Cytomegalo Virus

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: Hi,

My mother age 60 yrs/F is diagnosed with Glioblastoma with Oligodendroglial component (GBMO) last year i.e. XXXXXXX 2013.

As per one of the latest research in brain tumors, which many articles cited as breakthrough, showed strong association between GBM and Cytomegalo virus(CMV) infection found by Life Extension mag and Karolinska institute. The researcher found CMV active in almost 100 percent of GBM patient and play major role in cell replication and gene mutations. The current treatment to treat GBM have overall median survival(os) of around 12 months. But when same were been treated with anti CMV drug Valganciclovir (Valcyte) the overall median survival substantially increased to 54.6 months(almost 5 years).

Since there is always concern in using drug Valganciclovir with respect to its side effects, can you please let me know what are the possible medicines available in Ayurveda for treatment of Cytomegalo virus(CMV) infection?

Brief Answer:
CMV and Immune status

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern

1. As your mother is a diagnosed case and under supervision, remain under constant medical observation and guidance regarding GBMO [as surgical issue is concerned]

2. Do let me know about the prognosis of GBMO and and about immune status of your mother, since one can include Immunomodulators [Rasayan] in prescription advised.
PS. since treatment of CMV is usually to improve immune status of affected individuals, I must know about her immunity

Please ignore the above question, Kindly answer the below question.

Hi,

1) Anser for Prognosis for GBMO:

GBMO comprises subset of GBM patients, which account almost to 11%. There have been little research done on the prognosis for GBMO. But in all research it points that GBMO has little bit better prognosis than normal GBM becaue of oligo component.

Also to note that my mother dagonised methylated for MGMT gene test. Methylated for MGMT test indidcate most likely (but not necessarily in all 100% GBM patients) better prognosis.

2) Aswer for immune status

I am confused over what information you actully need wrt the term 'immune status'? Still I am providing you the below breif medical history and detail history in the attached file.
Please note that below is brief medical history and for detailed case history please see the attached file "Detailed Case History.png"

1st surgery (3rd XXXXXXX 2013, Histopath --> GBMO) + 30 radiation cycle + 11 chemo cycles (drug Temozlamide)

2nd surgery (3rd July 2014, Histopath --> 85-90% necrosis with extremely scant residual tumor with low grade infiltrating component) + 1 new chemo cycle (drug comb PCV).

Also note that she tolerated 11 cycles of chemo( drug Temazolmide) after her first surgery without any single issue but later was re operated (for necrosis, side effect of radiation) and later post 2nd surgery her condition substantially declined after her first new chemo cycle (drug comb PCV -- Procarbazine,CCNU and Vincristine).

Now she is gradually showing little improvent in her condition.

As per the oncologist, the chemo PCV is higly toxic and this declination is generally observed in all patients and it takes time for improvement. Currently we have kept next chemo cycle on hold considering such toxicity of it. I was puzzeld whether to continue the next cycle of PCV and in the mean time I came across the article 'CMV and Brain Tumor' having ongoing clinical trials and has produced substantially good results in intial phsase of trials. I personally contacted two peoples who have managed well this disease by controlling CMV infection.

Please let me also know herbal remedies(in case if you know any) along with Ayurveda treatment?

Brief Answer:
Chemotherapy and Imunomodulation

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back.

1. recent studies have shown that patients who have undergone left side temporal lobectomy [as in her case] are at greater risk for verbal memory decline.

2. Anything you do, go low and go slow and make changes gradually, as small changes become habit, you can continue to ADD more healthy choices.
3. Eat a variety of nutrient rich food but which have some added advantage like: . Cabbage: cholesterol lowering benefits,
. carrot: helps in liver detoxification,
. cauliflower: ideal against abdominal problems,
. dates: best for muscle development,
. onions: contains flavinoids which protect against cardiovascular disease, garlic has broad spectrum antibiotic properties.

4. IMMUNOMODULATION (Immunity)
Rasayana drugs (Rejuvenation/Immunomodulators) should be instituted in management as part of XXXXXXX (palliative) therapy i.e. which corrects the dysfunction of tissues without disturbing the functions of normal tissues, also Rasayana drugs potentiates humoral antibodies, by increasing serum Immunoglobulin’s such as IgA,IgG and IgM.

i.Proteins are essential for antibodies production so milk, egg (white), beans, yogurt, soyamilk, pumpkin, squash, watermelon, peanuts, almonds, if non-vegetarian (meat) are choices
ii. Vitamin A: helps to maintain Thymus [antiviral] gland : thus XXXXXXX carrots, cantaloupe, egg yolk, apricots, pumpkin, papaya, are ideal
iii. Vitamin C: is needed for proper functioning of immune system: amla is best
iv.Vitamin E: is a powerful anti oxidant which helps to stimulate antibody production: peanuts, dried apricots, cooked spinach, taro root can be taken
v.Vitamin B is important for the activity of phagocytes: eggs, cheese, pistachio, raw garlic, sunflower and sesame oil.
vi.Ashwagandha,Mandukparni,Shatavari,Trikatu,Vacha,Guduchi,are best Immunomdulators, while:
a. Amalaki-Immunity-Tulsi[ORGANIC INDIA]
b. AS-4-CHYAWANPRASH [PRAVEK]
c. Immuwin-Prolife [BalVedics]
d. JENAID-A-B [Jainam]
e. Septilin [Himalya] are the prescription drugs, you can consult with an Ayurveda Physician there about the same.

Hi,

Thanks for replying. It seems from your answer that the mechanism to tacke the disease is by increasing immunity of the patient. I am thinking to tackle the issue by following five lines of action:

1. To enhance the immune system of the patient
(This you have all already answered.)

2. To directly attack the CMV.
(Valganciclovir or Valcyte has been found effective against CMV but with considerable side effects.)

3. To reduces cox-2 (chronic inflamation) in the GI track and helps pass toxins out of the lower GI organs fast and effectively as well as helping repair the kidneys from treatment.

4. To turn down cox-2 in the brain and turns up P53 a often turned down (by viruses and cancer) Tumor a Suppressor Gene.
(Research have shown that this has been done by externlly provindng Melatonin, which is hormnoe secreted by penal gland to regulate jet lag. But the doses are quite large almost 20 mg per day and I concern regarding its usage side effect).

5. To rebuild the flora in the intestinal track as to keep up immunity and not give other pathogens a chance to spread so easily.
(Research have shown promising use of Probiotics for this. But again when given externally for ill and immuno suprresed patients this shown some degree of complication)

As we know use of allopathic substitue has been there at the cost of considerable side effects and hence I am intreseted in knowing the ayurvedic/ herbal sustitue along with the dosage for the same so that it can have very minimal or no side effects.

Brief Answer:
Ayurveda Management

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back

1. In Ayurveda we believe that disease mainly arise from "gut", and healthy 'stomach' [amashaya] of person cures abdominal disorders.
PS. In Ayurveda we hold: ‘ सर्वे रोगा: मंदाग्नि” [sarve roga mandagni] since virus first colonizes the colon [ causing AMA [toxin production] and proliferates there before it floods the system [example being Enteric fever, AIDS virus]

2. So line of treatment will be:
i. Expelling the already formed AAM [use of mild laxative like trifla churan].
ii. Methods to prevent further AAM formation [use of deepan/pachan drugs ]
iii. [Guggulu and Kachnaar, is/are drug of choice in such cases, thus take them as mono therapy or ask for prescription medicines like: Nityanand-Ras, Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Arogya-Vardhini, Triphala-Guggulu and Punarnavadi-Guggulu.
iv. curd is the best probiotic.
