Question: diet for diverticulosis

Answered by Dr. Michelle Gibson James 29 minutes later
Brief Answer:
high fiber, low fat diet

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Diverticular disease (diverticulosis) is diagnosed when there are out pockets or out pouches in the colon.
These out pockets are called diverticula.

A high fiber low fat diet is generally recommended to help prevent acute attacks of diverticulitis (infection or inflammation of the diverticula).

This high fiber, low fat diet would involve foods such as: cereals, XXXXXXX oats, grains such as barley, seeds such as flax seeds etc, vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, carrots, brussel sprouts, spinach, turnips etc), legumes such as beans, fruits, brown rice or brown pasta

At least 5 servings daily of fruits and/or vegetables , this means that fruits/vegetables should be used with each main meal and snack in between.

If it is difficult to get enough dietary fiber then you can use a fiber supplement as well eg metamucil,, cetrucil, benefiber

If you get an acute attack of diverticulitis, then you have to use a clear liquid diet for a few days if it is mild or hold off all food/liquids , if it is severe. In severe cases, antibiotics may be needed.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
