Question: Have been on Tekturna for some time. Insurance company now has removed it from formulary and cost has gone from $60/month to over 200/month. Is there a more cost effective replacement?

Brief Answer:
Cost effective alternatives available.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Tekturna (aliskiren) is an anti-hypertensive (blood pressure lowering) medicine. It is the first in a class of drugs called direct renin inhibitors. There is currently no therapeutically equivalent cost effective generic version of Tekturna available in the United States. However, functionally similar (but not the same) but much cost effective are medicines belonging to the groups angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs). You can discuss with your treating physician if they are suitable for you.
