Suggest An Alternate Medicine For Osmotic Laxative

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Aug 2016
Question: My husband had a Gastric Pull Through for Adeno Ca of the distal esophagus & gastric cardia in 2009. He has a tube feeding via a J-tube which supplies 75% of his cal. He is in considerable lower abd. discomfort every AM until he evacuates x2. His stools are formed, soft and very difficult to get out. He takes Miralax, M.o.M., Senna (occas.) Glycerine suppositories and Benefiber. He also takes regular prescribed opioids, but unfortunately Amitex (?sp.) is too expensive. He drinks lots of fluids
1. Are there other types of Laxatives besides OSMOTIC?
2. What is the value / outcome of taking insoluable or soluable fiber?
Thank you very much for any recommendations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam

Thanks for asking to healthcaremagic

Recommendation and answer below

1)Reduce the dose of benefiber as it enhances bulk forming of stool which cannot be evacuated easily.Yes,there is another kind of laxative which is stimulant like bisacodyl(Dulcolax) which can be used..If possible, make dosage adjustment of opioids prescribed for postoperative pain which also causes constipation.

2)Soluble fiber helps reduce cholesterol, control diabetes, lower risk of heart disease..It delays emptying through the intestinal tract eg) legumes, lentils, fruits, vegetables, barley, seeds, nuts etc

On the other hand, insoluble fiber helps improve digestive health i.e prevent constipation, helps bulk forming and fastened emptying of contents through the intestinal tract eg) whole grains, wheat XXXXXXX skin and peeling of fruit, root tubers etc

Hope this helps..Further queries are welcome..

Take care.
