Brief Answer:
yes

Detailed Answer:
hi, i am a liver specialist.
Xifaxan is usually given for hepatic encephalopathy, which is common in advanced cirrhosis. Xifaxan is an antibiotic, but it is expensive, and some medical insurances don't cover it.
You have a few alternatives:
- call the pharmaceutical company (Salix pharmaceuticals), and they usually can provide huge discounts or patient assistance.
- Lactulose is another commonly prescribed medication for encephalopathy, however it causes diarrhea and gas, and most patients don't like it.
- Other antibiotics: before the approval of Xifaxan, we commonly prescribed Metronidazole (flagyl) or neomycin (however neomycin can cause kidney problems and we no longer recommend it). Metronidazole is very cheap, and you can probably get it for less than 10$ a month. Ask your prescribing doctor. No medications can be prescribed through healthcaremagic.
Hopefully that helps. let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
