Suggest Alternative Medication In Place Of Codeine Phosphate

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jun 2016
Question: RECENTLY I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A "COMPRESSION FRACTURE" OF THE "T-8 TO T-9 VETERBRAE.

I HAVE BEEN TREATING THIS WITH CODEINE PHOSPHATE 3X 30MG TABLETS 4 TIMES PER DAY AND 2X 500MG OF PARACETAMOL 4 TIMES PER DAY AS REQUIRED.

BUT I AM FINDING THERE IS LITTLE OR NO RELIEF.

THIS IS REGARDED AS A C2 CONTROLLED DRUG AND THEREFORE I REALISE THERE ARE RISKS
AND DANGERS IN TAKING THIS DRUG.

WHAT VIABLE ALTERNATIVES DO I HAVE ?
AS I FEEL MY DOCTORS MAY NOT HAVE GIVEN ME ALL THE ALTERNATIVES
THEY HAVE ALSO THROWN IN THE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY NAPROSYN.

AS A REHABILITATION PLAN I HAVE :

(1) A FULL BACK BRACE
(2) HOT WATER BOTTLES FREQUENTLY
(3) MEDICATION
(4) LIMITING ALL LIFTING AND STRENOUS MOVEMENTS.

THEY TRIED ME ON "DHC" FOR A WEEK BUT IT WAS TOO MUCH AND THE SIDE EFFECTS WERE NOT GOOD.

YOUR ANSWER PLEASE.

Brief Answer:
Tramadol can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain killers - codeine phosphate with paracetamol that you are taking should be adequate to control the pain that you have. Another alternative is a combined use of tramadol and paracetamol. The best way to manage pain is to have an absolute bed rest. Using a full back brace and walking around also causes a slight movement of the fractured fragments that causes pain and delays the healing.
It is best to take an absolute bed rest and use the back brace whenever you have to get up from the lying position. Do get tramadol prescribed from your physician.
I hope this answers your query.

DEAR DR TAYAL,

DO I TAKE IT THEN I SHOULD USE THE TRAMADOL + PANADOL IN ADDITIONAL TO THE CODEINE I WAS PRESCRIBED ?

IT WOULD BE A SIMPLER SOLUTION TO MY PAIN ISSUES.

WITH NO BREAK THROUGH PAIN.

I NOTE YOUR COMMENTS ON BED REST WHICH REINFORCES THE DIAGNOSING DOCTORS INDICATION OF THE SERIOUSNESS OF CONDITION OF MY BACK.

KIND REGARDS,

YOUR ANSWER AT YOUR EARLIEST.

Brief Answer:
Take tramdol instead of codeine.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You can take Tramadol instead of codeine not along with codeine. It will have lesser side effects and will give you a better pain relief. Absolute bed rest will help a lot and will hasten the recovery and fracture healing.
Hope my answer is helpful.
