Suggest Alternative Medication In Place Of Ascoril That Does Not Cause Sleep Disturbance In A Child

Question: My daughter is five years and is currently recovering from a cold. When she was down with cold, we gave her Relent Syrup and the cold subsided in a couple of days. But since then (last 3 days) she has some congestion is her chest. Her coughs are sometimes productive and sometimes dry. We have given her Ascoril and this is the expectorant that we generally use. The problem is that, with Ascoril she coughs a lot when she sleeps and is not able to sleep properly. Same thing happens in school. Is there any cough syrup or medicine that we can give her so that she can at least sleep peacefully and attend school. At the same time we don't want her congestion to get worse.

Can this be given along with Ascoril or should I discontinue Ascoril?

Since she is coughing up phlegm, will Benadryl Cough formula, help keep the phelgm loose?

You should discontinue Ascoril. Benadryl will not help loosen the phlegm. In the pediatric age group, there is no need to used medicines to loosen the phlegm. Plenty of water will take care of loosening the phlegm, please.
