Suffering From Hair Loss. What Nutrients To Take To Prevent Further Loss?

Posted on Thu, 5 Dec 2013
Question: I am asking this question on behalf of my son, who is a 26 yr old professional. Please suggest a suitable Doctor for the Hair loss issue. Ever since he came to the US for his higher studies in 2010, he is having continuous hair loss. However he never had any hair loss issue back home. Does AZ state water add to the hair loss problem. What nutrients he has to take care of to bring this problem under control? He stopped his swimming a month ago, due to the fear that Chlorinated water in the pools would aggravate the situation further despite swim cap on his head. Current medication: He underwent a surgery a week ago for Pilonidal Sinus and Hidradinitis Suppurativa and hence he is on pain killer medicine now for another one week minimum. No allergies so far. Other than the above two surgeries, he was fine all along. Forgot to mention earlier: Need a Doctor's name for Hair Loss issue in XXXXXXX AZ , USA zip: 85226 area (within 10 miles please) Sorry to add one more question: After the Pilonidal Sinus surgery, how can he get the remaining hair at the back removed, that is by Razor or Laser Hair removal method ? How safe or how painful will the Laser Hair removal be? How many sittings does it need to remove the back-hair, (ie the entire buttock area just below the Pilonidal surgery site)? Is Laser hair removal technique a fool-proof method or will the hair grow back again after a few months or years ? Thanks in advance for your replies. [Also, our Sincere thanks to Dr. XXXXXXX Mazumdar, for suggesting the Surgeon's names in the neighborhood of XXXXXXX 85226 AZ, USA for his recently concluded PS & HS surgeries]

Brief Answer: Hi Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for posting your query on XXXXXXX Does AZ state water add to the hair loss problem? A. Usual causes are dandruff, recurrent medicine use, medicated shampoos and oils, hereditary, nutritional deficiencies like iron, vitamin, calcium etc. Water may contribute to some of the causes. Impurities in water may cause recurrent infection, etc that may lead to medicine use. Thus drinking filtered water from reverse osmosis technique is recommended. If it is male pattern baldness then it must be present in male members of the family. In such a case different set of medicines are needed and will be prescribed by a physician. What nutrients he has to take care of to bring this problem under control? A. He can first go for blood tests to see if he is deficient in iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, calcium, vitamin D etc. Minerals like iron, manganese, sulfur etc are implicated sometimes. He can use mineral sugar rather than white sugar. Also he can take biotin tablets and multivitamin tablets after getting the tests done. After the Pilonidal Sinus surgery, how can he get the remaining hair at the back removed, that is by Razor or Laser Hair removal method ? A. I think laser hair removal is very commonly used and has satisfactory results with repeat treatments. How safe or how painful will the Laser Hair removal be? A. It is a safe procedure and is routinely performed. Not a painful procedure. How many sittings does it need to remove the back-hair, (ie the entire buttock area just below the Pilonidal surgery site)? A. The sittings will be multiple depending on the hair growth and the number of hair follicles covered in one sitting. Upto 8 treatments may be needed. Is Laser hair removal technique a fool-proof method or will the hair grow back again after a few months or years ? A. It is permanent in the sense that the hair follicles once treated usually do not grow hair. New hair follicles may become active, etc. Thus touch ups may be needed in 1 or 2 years. You need consultation with a dermatologist for hair loss issue. Thus I am writing contact information for two doctors in your area. Dr. XXXXXXX R.
