Should I Take Antibiotics Before Tooth Surgery Inspite Of Having Painful Gums?
Question: IHello, I had my gum cut around where I had a tooth that was ground down to make room for a crown in three weeks. The three shots I had to numb the area just about wiped me out because of the anesthetic. Anyway I had stitches, its been 5 days and my gum still hurts. I took an antibiotic right before the surgery but none after. just the mouth spray they gave me. I am thinking I should start on the antibiotics. Should I?

As per the history posted here you can continue with your antibiotics that were given to you prior to surgery.But please remember to take them as per suggested dosage and without discontinuity.Any changes might lead to resistance to bacteria from that particular drug/antibiotic.
In case of any minor infection,antibiotics will take care and you will feel better,but if the problem persists then please see your dentist soon.
If you find the problem persists then it shows that there is problem with the crown.
Also please let me know the following details.
1.Did you take complete course of antibiotics prior to surgery as suggested?
2When is your next appointment with your dentist for removal of stitches?

Thankyou for your answer. I have an app. to get the stitches out in two weeks, then in 3 for the crown. I had previously taken amoxicillan 500mg 2 hrs. before the dentist app.on Mon. the 2nd. then one in the evening. They did not tell me to take any. So I discontinued the antibiotic. But because my gum was still hurting I took one lastnight and 2 an hr. ago. I know you are not suppose to stop and stop antibiotics, but in this case since I wasn't told anything i did not know what to do.

you can continue with your antibiotics for three more days.The dosage will be 500 mg Amoxicillin twice daily for five days.
Since you have already taken for two days you can take it for three more consecutive days.Please do not stop in between.
This antibiotic causes loose stools as its common side effect but no need to worry.It will stop once you are done with your course.
Once you complete your antibiotic course then look for the symptoms.It should subside. In case, if you find the symptoms persists then visit your dentist for clinical examination and x ray for the concerned tooth and adjacent gums,do not wait for the given appointment.
