Do I Need To Take Equirab Again When I Wasn't Able To Take The Remaining Four Dosage Of Anti-rabies Vaccination Due To Shortage Of Vaccine?

Question: Hi,

I was bitten by a dog on 17 June , the next day I took Equirab, the rabies immunoglobulin, and the first dose of anti-rabies vaccine. But, unfortunately, due to shortage of vaccine, I wasn't able to take the remaining four dosage of anti-rabies vaccination.

Now, I have bought the vaccination. So, I have two questions and they're as follows:

1) Do I need to take Equirab again? I have read that if given after more than 7 days of first dose, it might suppress making of antibody (As per WHO).

2) Do I need to start taking anti-rabies vaccination from the beginning?

Please answer my questions as I am very scared and can't sleep because of fear of rabies.

Brief Answer:
ARV should be started again

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

1) Equirab is not required again. And it does not suppress the antibody formation, so no need to worry about that.

2) However, Anti Rabies vaccination should be preferably restarted from the first dose. This will offer full protection.

Please check with your physician if s/he shares my view and if can prescribe these medications to improve your symptoms.

Post your further questions if any.

Thank you

Thanks for your answer. I haven't consulted any doctor in this (You're the first doctor I have shared this situation). I was bitten by a dog 5 years ago and was given Rabies Immunoglobulin and Abhyarab, the anti-rabies vaccine on the same day apart from tetanus vaccine.

I have taken tetanus on June 25. So, I have one follow up question. Will it harm me if I take Rabies Immunoglobulin again along with my first dose of ARC?

This is just to calm my nerves. Will Equirab, the Rabies Immunoglobulin, interfere with the ARC?

Please let me know.

Brief Answer:
Immunoglobulin does not interfere with ARV

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Immunoglobulin will not harm you if taken with 1st dose of ARV.

Both work mutually but not antagonistically.

Hence you need not worry.

Post your further questions if any.

Thank you
