Should I Seek Medical Attention For Sharp Pain After Lower Back Injury?

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Feb 2022
Question: During my boot camp exercise class this morning I hurt my lower back badly. I was doing a windmill move which involves twisting your upper body and something moved suddenly in my lower back that made me jump and feel sharp pain. I can not completely straighten up or bend down. I also cannot lift any type of weight. Any strain takes my breath away to put any strain on my back. I can sit but getting out of the sitting position takes a really long time and is very painful. Should I seek medical attention or try to wait for a day or so and see how it feels?

Brief Answer:
Probably vertebral disc issue

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.

It sounds to me like disc herniation issue or lumbago which is related to nerve roots around the spine. This is common especially after sudden movement or inappropriate exercise. In most cases this may be unpleasant but usually is self-limiting.

You need to rest strictly, take nonsteroid painkillers (eg. Acetaminophen/Tylenol 650mg thrice daily after some food). It should improve in next few days.

If however, you experience legs numbness or weakness or you can't control bowel movements or urination then you should see a doctor immediately. Otherwise, it can be treated at home, and if pain becomes significant, you should see GP to have stronger painkiller shot.

Wish you good health.
Regards
