Should I Do An Amniocentesis During Pregnancy?

Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: Hello doctor, I have a question about a test result. In the first trimester blood test I got a 1:2836 for downs syndrome and 1:10000 for other trisomies. The NT scan at 12 weeks was 1.5 mm and the nasal bone was present from 10 weeks onwards. My question is if it's ok not to do an amniocentesis and if everything seems ok. I'm 24 years old.

Brief Answer: it is ok not to do amniocentesis Detailed Answer: Hello, Your baby and you are perfectly fine. You are 24 yrs old, with normal NT scan and nasal bone at 10weeks of gestation. I do not see a reason for you to undergo amniocentesis. Your risk for downs and other trisomies is also minimal. Is there any specific reason why your doctor wants an amniocentesis for you? If there is no valid medical reason, you must not go for it. It is ok not to get it done. Everything seems to be fine to me. Happy pregnancy!

No, my doctor did not suggest getting one, but u read that some women were offered one, so that made me start wondering if I should have one

Brief Answer: You do not need one Detailed Answer: All right, I see that you were just reading about it. In my view, you should not get one done. Do not disturb a normal pregnancy unnecessarily. Hope it is clear to you.
